Green card processing in 2026 ranges from 10 months (immediate-relative spouse of a U.S. citizen) to over a decade (EB-2 applicants born in India). The category you qualify under, and your country of birth, are the two variables that matter most. Below are realistic timelines based on current USCIS service-center processing data and the May 2026 Visa Bulletin.
Family-based: immediate relatives (no backlog)
These categories have no annual cap and no visa bulletin wait. Processing time = USCIS workload only.
IR-1 / CR-1 (spouse of U.S. citizen)
10–13 months through Adjustment of Status (already in U.S.) or 11–15 months through consular processing.
IR-2 (child under 21 of U.S. citizen)
10–14 months. Adds 2–3 months if child is abroad and needs consular processing.
IR-5 (parent of U.S. citizen aged 21+)
11–14 months. Requires the U.S. citizen child to be 21 or older.
Family-based: preference categories (visa bulletin applies)
These have annual numerical caps. Your "priority date" must become current on the Visa Bulletin before USCIS will adjudicate.

Adjustment of Status from H-1B / L-1
If you are filing I-485 from a temporary work visa, expect 12–18 months from concurrent I-140/I-485 filing (when EB visa is current) to green card in hand. The H-1B continues to authorize work in the meantime, and the I-485-pending EAD/AP arrives in roughly 5–7 months as a fallback travel and work document.
Naturalization (N-400)
Once you have your green card and meet the 3 or 5 year residency rule, the N-400 application currently takes 8–14 months nationwide. Several field offices (Boston, San Francisco) are running 6–9 months; backlogged offices (Newark, Houston) closer to 14 months. The biometrics step is now reused from the I-485 file in most cases.
What speeds things up
- Premium Processing (I-907): $2,805 fee, guarantees USCIS adjudicates I-140 (and certain I-129 categories) within 15 business days. Does not help I-485.
- Complete I-693 at filing: Under PA-2023-26, the medical exam now has indefinite validity once signed. Filing your I-485 with the I-693 already attached can prevent the most common RFE and shave 4–6 months off your timeline.
- RFE-proof submissions: Tax transcripts (not returns), I-864 done correctly, all foreign documents properly translated, no missing pages, photos that meet specs. Each RFE adds 60–120 days.
- EAD/AP combo cards: While they don’t speed up the green card itself, they let you work and travel during the wait.
- Service-center transfers: Once filed, USCIS occasionally transfers cases between centers. You cannot request this, but it sometimes resolves stuck files.
The Visa Bulletin is published monthly at travel.state.gov. Check it every month if you’re in a preference category — movement of even a few weeks on your priority date can mean you can file your I-485 sooner.
